Sometimes you sit in front of the TV and you see politics in action but you also see total inaction in your own community. I see hundreds of opportunities to involve the youth of our community in the voting process. Being a retired newspaper circulation manager, I know how hard it is to get young Americans to pick up a paper never mind subscribe to it. Getting them involved, registered and actually voting is just as hard.
We all tend to think that somehow mysteriously the people we wish to see in office will get there and that the changes we wish to see come about will obviously happen because we know we are in the majority regarding these candidates and the changes we wish to take place. However as we sit by the TV and watch the results, many times our hopes and dreams are dashed simply because thousands of people like us did just that, sat by the TV and wanted someone to win and wanted changes to take place but we never got up, went out, registered and then actually voted.
Change unfortunately does not just magically happen because the majority of the people out there wish it to. Someone once told me, "Create change or change will create you." Well folks that is why George Bush stayed in office for 8 years, that is why our jobs have been exported overseas, that is why so many people go without health care and medicine and that is why if we do not go out and "Create Change", we as a society will remain the pawns of Corporate American and the politics of hate and distrust rather than those of unity, respect and prosperity for all.
Is anyone out there interested in organizing, planning and taking part in a basic voter registration drive. This would be at the grassroots level and would be no harder than setting up a booth outside a supermarket to sell Girl Scout cookies. We need to call around and get permission from Store managers to set up outside their stores and then it is simply volunteering your time to sit at the table and ask people going in and out of the stores if they have registered to vote and giving them the directions and if we can obtain them, the forms to do so. We would need to encourage them to let us know if they have any difficulties in registering or questions.
If you are interested and would like to get involved I have formed a Group on http://my.barackobama.com/ called SummervilleRegisterNow (SRN).
You will need to create your own page by following the simple instructions and then find the group under the heading "Groups", join and let's start getting things running.
